Tiara Coupe Utility

No items found.

The Tiara was the first Toyota to be built outside Japan and made it's debut in Australia in 1963.

It was assembled by Australian Motor Industries in Port Melbourne in 1963, alongside Standard Vanguards and Triumph Heralds.

1,684 Tiara's were built in Australia between 1963 - 1965. It had 3 models - 4 door salon, station wagon and coupe utility.

The styling of the Tiara is something to behold; from the ovoid grille and indicators to the miniature rear fins. The front end is reminiscent of the 1955 - 1957 Ford Thunderbird.

The coupe utility had a rugged all steel rear deck capable of carrying 10cwt (500kg).

The Tiara was powered by the super reliable R Series 1500 Engine backed with standard 3 tree manual transmission. Suspension was by independent torsion bar and semi elliptics at the rear, which gave a firm but comfortable ride. There were drum brakes fitted to all four wheels, which were powerful enough when judged by what was on offer at the time and they were reasonbly fade resistant. The standard finish was not exceptional and although there was no heater you did get a cigarette lighter, along with two speed wipers and fuel/temperature gauges.

This car was purchased by Lyle as a 'restoration project' from a Sunday Times advertisement in 2007. It is a West Australian car purchased at Premier Motors in Perth. The car was restored with parts sourced from all over Australia and is painted in the original paint colour.
